On October 18, 2026, it was reported that Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe stated the company is expanding its technology business beyond electric vehicle manufacturing through in-house automotive AI models, end-to-end autonomous driving systems, and custom silicon. Rivian is collaborating with Uber to develop autonomous driving technologies for passenger vehicles and future Robotaxis, and working with Arm and TSMC to research 5-nanometer processors;

The company is also advancing a joint technology initiative with Volkswagen Group valued at $5.8 billion, focusing on electrified architectures and software. Scaringe noted that Rivian may potentially license its electrified architectures, software, AI models, and autonomous driving technologies to additional automotive brands in the future. The industrial robotics company Mind Robotics, founded by Scaringe, is currently held by Rivian with a 31% stake, and Doug Field—former executive at Ford, Apple, and Tesla—has been appointed President of the company.
