Automattic Confirms Mullenweg's Return to CEO Role, Board's Previous Attempt to Remove Him Unsuccessful

According to TechCrunch, Automattic has confirmed that Matt Mullenweg has resumed his role as Chairman and CEO, receiving full board support. A week prior, the Automattic board had voted to suspend Mullenweg and appointed CFO Mark Davies as interim CEO. Subsequently, Mullenweg reportedly refused to step down, regained access to the company’s Slack channels, and publicly asserted he had reestablished control internally.

The company spokesperson noted that multiple executives and employees have publicly backed Mullenweg’s return on X. Mullenweg himself has not issued an official statement regarding his return, merely commenting that this marks his fifth "coup" experience. Additionally, reports indicate that board member Toni Schneider has resigned, though Automattic has declined to comment.
