Recently, according to API monitoring, the OpenAI Responses API has changed the return status for the model ID gpt-6-astra—suspected to be Astra—from 400 to 404. Previously, invalid model names would return a 400 error, but gpt-6-astra now returns a 404, indicating that the model ID is present in the backend but not yet publicly available.
Similar signals were previously observed with Anthropic Fable 5.1, which underwent the same status transition prior to its launch on AWS Bedrock. However, gpt-6-astra may not be the final name; earlier reports from The Information indicated that OpenAI had considered naming Astra as GPT-6 before ultimately abandoning the idea.
