Google Avoids Ad Business Breakup, U.S. Judge Orders Operational Adjustments to Benefit Competitors

According to a federal court ruling, U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia ruled that Google does not need to divest its advertising technology business, but requires the company to adjust its commercial practices to benefit competitors. The judge found that Google engaged in illegal monopolistic practices in maintaining its ad tech business, yet rejected the Department of Justice’s earlier request to spin off Chrome browser and Android operating system.

The full opinion will be sealed and released within 14 days to allow parties to make necessary redactions. Google expressed satisfaction with the ruling, with its Vice President of Regulatory Affairs stating that the court’s rejection of the divestiture proposal helps small businesses reach new customers.
