According to TechCrunch, Google has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with geothermal energy company Fervo to buy 396 megawatts of electricity from Fervo’s Cape Station plant in Utah, intended for its planned AI data centers. The plant is expected to come online in 2028, with Google having the option to purchase an additional 600 megawatts by June 2030, bringing the total capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt.

Fervo has been approved to develop up to 2 gigawatts of geothermal capacity at Cape Station, with third-party assessments indicating the site’s geothermal resource potential could support up to 4 gigawatts. Full development would double the current U.S. geothermal installed capacity. This agreement is part of Google’s broader strategy to secure clean energy for its AI expansion, following prior agreements for 933 megawatts of natural gas-powered electricity. Geothermal generation helps balance Google’s net-zero emissions target by 2030. Fervo went public this year, and its stock rose approximately 30% shortly after the announcement.
