Norway Plans to Ban Wearable Devices with Cameras, Such as Smart Glasses, Citing Need for Privacy Regulation

According to reports, Norwegian Digital Minister Karianne Tung stated that the government is considering banning smart glasses and other wearable head-mounted devices equipped with cameras due to privacy concerns. Tung noted that such devices produced by companies like Meta and Snap are camera-enabled and internet-connected, and could potentially introduce facial recognition capabilities in the future, drawing criticism from advocates of civil liberties; some members of the public have dubbed them "peeping glasses." She plans to establish an expert panel to study how to better protect individual privacy rights in public spaces, possibly including a ban on the use of facial recognition technology in public areas.
