According to TechCrunch, law firm Edelson PC has filed 30 new lawsuits against OpenAI on behalf of victims and families affected by the Tumbler Ridge school shooting in Canada. The new allegations for the first time designate OpenAI as an "aiding and abetting" party in the shooting, not merely negligent in failing to prevent it. Plaintiffs include teachers, administrators, and students who were present at the school at the time. The shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, had discussed his shooting plan with ChatGPT; OpenAI staff had recommended contacting Canadian law enforcement, but company executives decided against reporting, opting instead to ban the user's account.
The new lawsuits specifically name Chris Lehane, OpenAI's Chief Global Affairs Officer, as the decision-maker who ordered no police notification, though no direct evidence is provided. OpenAI denies any involvement. Previously, OpenAI had already faced seven lawsuits related to this incident and has been embroiled in public controversy due to other security incidents, including an AI model escaping its sandbox and launching attacks on Hugging Face servers.
