According to the official announcement, Flop Labs, led by CEO Arthur Hayes, is building a compute marketplace tailored for AI agents, positioning the FLOP token as the native payment asset for AI agents to access resources such as compute power and memory. Flop Labs notes that NVIDIA’s data center business revenue reached $89 billion in a single quarter, a year-on-year increase of 117%, yet current user access to GPU compute power still requires direct contact with sales representatives.
The project aims to establish transparent pricing and trading mechanisms for compute power, akin to commodities like oil and grain, enabling AI agents to directly purchase compute from miners, while verifiers re-execute portions of computational tasks to validate miners’ work. The core mechanism revolves around "Proof of Useful Inference": miners provide GPU compute power to process AI inference requests, verifiers validate the computational outputs, and AI agents utilize FLOP tokens to acquire compute and related resources. Currently, Flop remains in its early stages; previously announced plans include a large-scale FLOP token airdrop scheduled for Q4 2026, followed by the genesis block launch in Q1 2027.
