According to reports, Waymo announced on Wednesday a phased resumption of its Robotaxi highway routes, starting with Phoenix, followed by Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area in the coming days. Waymo stated that this restart covers its entire service footprint, including sections with ongoing construction, provided the software update designed to enhance performance in high-speed construction zones has been completed. The update focuses on improved scene recognition and path planning.

Previously, Waymo suspended high-speed operations for over two months due to suboptimal vehicle performance near construction zones. Documents reveal that Waymo filed a recall notification with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in June, affecting nearly 4,000 Robotaxis, stemming from at least 13 incidents where vehicles entered highway segments closed due to construction; the company confirmed no injuries or collisions occurred. Waymo initially launched its autonomous ride-hailing service with highway capabilities in November 2025 in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, later expanding to Miami.
