Introduction: Maia 200 is already powering Copilot production workloads, GitHub Copilot, and Microsoft Foundry

Microsoft announced on October 12, the Maia accelerator family will scale to multi-gigawatt deployments starting in 2027, positioning Maia as the primary inference system for Microsoft’s products and services. The third-generation Maia 300 is scheduled for production in 2027, delivering 40% higher tokens per megawatt compared to leading GPU systems, with rack-level token throughput reaching seven times that of Maia 200 under full 96-accelerator configuration.

JPMorgan’s report released on October 12, 2026, noted Reuters’ coverage of Microsoft’s plan to deploy over one million Maia 300 chips by 2027 to support internal AI services. JPMorgan maintains its Overweight rating on Microsoft with a price target of $625. Maia 200 is already supporting Copilot production workloads, with GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry expected to follow by year-end.

Maia Emerges as Primary Inference System

Microsoft plans to expand the Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments, commencing production in 2027. Maia will become the core inference platform for Microsoft’s products and services. Maia 200 is already operational for Microsoft Copilot, enabling the MAI team’s development of next-generation models. GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry are anticipated to adopt Maia by end-2026.

Microsoft has prior experience deploying OpenAI models, MAI models, and leading open-source model families. JPMorgan views Maia’s transition from auxiliary role to primary inference system as a pivotal strategic shift in Microsoft’s AI infrastructure roadmap.

Multi-gigawatt deployment signifies that Maia will not only serve internal workloads but also underpin the entire Microsoft Cloud’s inference demands. JPMorgan expects Maia deployments to focus primarily on internal use cases, without prioritizing external compute revenue. The most direct impact for investors lies in capital expenditure intensity and cloud software cost structure.

Maia 300 Delivers Substantial Performance Gains

Maia 300 delivers 40% higher tokens per megawatt than leading GPU systems. Under full 96-accelerator configuration, rack-level token throughput reaches seven times that of Maia 200. Maia 200 achieves 1.7x higher tokens per watt compared to GPU infrastructure in native AI capabilities.

Performance gains stem from software-defined dataflow and architectural innovations in computation. Hardware advancements include chiplet architecture enabling higher per-watt high-bandwidth memory (HBM) bandwidth, alongside vertically scalable networking designed for datacenter-scale inference clusters.

JPMorgan notes that Maia 300’s enhanced token throughput directly improves Copilot performance while reducing cost per compute unit. Microsoft Cloud gross margin currently sits in the mid-to-high 60s range. Maia deployment is expected to further improve gross margin.

Software-defined dataflow in Maia 300 optimizes data movement efficiency for inference tasks. Architectural innovations include chiplet design enhancing HBM bandwidth per watt. Vertically scalable networks enable large-scale inference clusters across datacenters. These synergistic advancements drive performance gains and cost reductions.

Million-Chip Deployment Drives Cost Optimization

Reuters reported Microsoft plans to deploy over one million Maia 300 chips by 2027. Microsoft also aims to more than double global datacenter capacity by 2032. JPMorgan forecasts Microsoft’s datacenter capacity will exceed 30 gigawatts by 2030.

Massive deployment of Maia accelerators combined with expanded datacenter capacity is expected to drive superior cost structures. JPMorgan estimates Microsoft’s fiscal 2027 capex at approximately $210 billion, and $17.5 billion for the calendar year 2026.

JPMorgan believes Maia deployment focuses on internal use cases, impacting capital expenditure intensity and cloud software cost structure. The combination of million-chip-scale deployment and datacenter expansion will optimize Microsoft’s overall infrastructure economics.

Million-chip deployment corresponds to multi-gigawatt capacity. With Maia 300 delivering 40% higher tokens per megawatt, inference throughput significantly increases under equivalent power consumption. JPMorgan projects Microsoft’s datacenter capacity to surpass 30 gigawatts by 2030, with capex reaching ~$210 billion in fiscal 2027. Scale effects and improved chip efficiency together drive down cost per inference unit.

Cloud Gross Margin Expected to Improve

As the primary inference system, Maia will enhance Copilot performance while lowering cost per compute unit. Microsoft Cloud gross margin currently operates in the mid-to-high 60s range. JPMorgan anticipates Maia deployment will further improve gross margin.

Maia deployment emphasizes internal use cases, with external compute revenue not a focal point. Investors should monitor capital expenditure intensity and cloud software cost dynamics. JPMorgan expects Maia deployment to optimize Microsoft Cloud’s cost structure and improve gross margin.

JPMorgan maintains its Overweight rating on Microsoft with a price target of $625. The performance uplift of Maia 300 and the million-chip deployment roadmap support Microsoft’s long-term AI infrastructure competitiveness. Reduced inference costs and improving cloud gross margin remain key metrics to watch.
