The institution calls the tool “Virtual Peer.” It poses questions during weekly learning modules and guides students through scenario-based exercises. The university emphasizes that AI activities are optional and serve only as supplementary to what they term “core learning”—which itself consists of online readings, videos, and quizzes, none of which require physical attendance. Final grades are determined solely by independent research tasks and examinations.
In other words, throughout the semester, students can complete the entire course without ever stepping into a physical classroom.
These courses were still delivered face-to-face in the first semester of this year. The university states that in 2027, in-person instruction will resume—but on an alternating semester basis. In effect, future students may be forced to choose between an “AI Semester” and a “Face-to-Face Semester.”
An anonymous student expressed frustration. Due to degree structure constraints, he was compelled to take the online version, feeling he had been shortchanged.
"This isn’t classroom discussion or a professor lecturing—it’s completing tasks with a robot," he said. "It feels like I’m teaching the robot how to steal teachers’ jobs."
Consider this: under Australia’s federal funding scheme, each psychology course costs AUD 2,174, with total undergraduate tuition exceeding AUD 50,000 over three years. Paying such a premium only to interact with algorithms leaves many students deeply dissatisfied.
Macquarie University responds that the tool was co-designed with educators, intended to support—not replace—faculty. Professors upload materials used on the platform and review content, ensuring that the “Virtual Peer” is more accurate and less prone to hallucination—the tendency of general-purpose AIs (like ChatGPT) to fabricate information. The platform also logs student interaction records.
Additionally, paid academic mentors remain available via optional weekly Zoom small-group sessions. Introductory courses enroll up to 400 students with six weekly sessions; capstone courses serve up to 700 students with ten weekly sessions—approximately one session per 70 students. The university encourages students seeking human interaction to attend, though attendance remains inconsistent, typically spiking just before assignment deadlines.
Data shows explosive adoption: the tool answered around 80,000 student queries in 2025, nearly matching that figure in the first half of 2026—mostly administrative inquiries. The university reports that the vast majority of surveyed staff and students found the tool valuable and would recommend it.
Macquarie is not alone. The University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney are also systematically integrating AI into pedagogy. The University of Sydney has become a pioneer—hundreds of scholars use its proprietary generative AI platform, “Cogniti,” to develop chatbots and scenario-based learning experiences. The platform has since been shared with institutions across Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.
At the end of August, the University of Sydney released a discussion paper envisioning a future where AI delivers personalized instruction to every student while drastically reducing face-to-face contact between faculty and students. The university spokesperson quickly clarified: “Human judgment, accountability, and interpersonal relationships can never be replaced by technology—this is not a cost-cutting measure.”
But unions and academic staff remain unconvinced.
Peter Chen, president of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Sydney branch, stated that due to chronic underfunding and shrinking academic staffing, delivering large-scale courses has already been challenging. This new document has deepened staff anxieties about their professional futures.
"Some fear losing their jobs," Chen said. "Others are terrified that everything that makes this work meaningful will vanish—and they’ll be left holding the bag only when things go wrong."
Sydney University staff are planning a strike this Wednesday, demanding protections including AI safeguards, amid mounting workloads and job insecurity. The union has made clear: no agreement will be accepted without explicit consideration of AI-related issues.
The university counters that AI is evolving too rapidly to be constrained by rigid, three-year enterprise agreements. But NTEU national president and Macquarie University scholar Dr. Alison Barnes retorts: “Academic staff are already overwhelmed by workload crises. Rolling out AI piecemeal to mask systemic problems risks causing even greater damage.”
Associate Professor Mina Jha from Central Queensland University has studied AI in higher education for years. She says she has never seen a university simultaneously reduce in-person instruction while introducing AI chatbots at scale. “Students need authentic human interaction,” Jha says. “If we replace all human mentoring with virtual avatars, student engagement faces serious risk.”
Her university is currently piloting a self-developed AI tool called “Birdy” across 24 units as supplementary support. Jha herself even created an AI avatar named “Nina Chatbot,” modeled after her own persona, to answer student queries. Yet she insists on a phased approach: “You must allow time for people to try, see value, and receive proper guidance on usage.”
Undoubtedly, AI brings efficiency gains, personalized services, and round-the-clock responsiveness to education. But when universities, under financial strain and enrollment pressure, treat AI as a shortcut to reduce labor costs, the essence of education—the human spark, intellectual collision, and emotional mentorship—may quietly erode.
If students pay exorbitant tuition only to receive cold, algorithm-driven dialogue logs, then their complaint of being “shortchanged” is not hyperbole. And faculty members aren’t just worried about losing jobs—they’re losing the dignity and purpose inherent in the role of guiding minds.
Technology should always be a tool, never a substitute. As universities rush to embed AI into classrooms, perhaps they should first ask: Are we truly upgrading education—or merely cheapening it through “cost optimization”?
