OpenAI and Claude Are Both Targeting Educators

Within less than a year, two global leading AI companies have successively launched teacher-focused products.

On July 14, Anthropic officially released Claude for Teachers, offering free access to advanced features for K12 educators in the United States, supporting teaching preparation, curriculum design, and learning analytics. Prior to this, OpenAI had already introduced ChatGPT for Teachers, similarly focused on supporting teachers in instruction, with plans to roll out to U.S. K12 school districts.

The competition between the two companies is not over student answer markets, but rather the daily work interfaces that teachers use for lesson planning, instruction, and managing educational information. This shift reflects not only an evolution in AI product form but also signals a new direction in the edtech industry.

From Higher Education to K12: Claude Expands Its Educational Footprint

On July 14, Anthropic officially launched Claude for Teachers, offering a free teacher version to K12 educators across the United States. This marks Anthropic’s first expansion into foundational education following its 2025 launch of Claude for Education for higher education institutions.

According to official documentation, certified U.S. K12 teachers can access Claude’s premium features at no cost. The product supports alignment with curricular standards across all 50 U.S. states, integrates educational resource retrieval, and has been optimized for key teaching scenarios including lesson planning, personalized instruction, student learning analysis, and instructional management. Teachers who register before June 30, 2027, will receive one full year of uninterrupted access.

Compared to general-purpose large language models, the most significant change in Claude for Teachers lies in its design philosophy: it is no longer merely an AI tool for answering questions, but instead is built around the daily workflow of educators. According to Anthropic, the product primarily targets lesson planning, individualized teaching, student performance analysis, and instructional administration—aiming to reduce time spent on repetitive tasks so teachers can focus more on classroom interaction and student guidance.

In the lesson planning phase, teachers can input course objectives and instructional needs, and Claude will generate lesson plans, classroom activity designs, and learning materials by aligning with state standards and available resources, adjusting content based on varying student proficiency levels. During classroom instruction and post-class analysis, teachers can upload test scores, classroom observation notes, attendance records, and other data, which Claude then processes to assess learning progress, identify knowledge gaps, and assist in refining future instructional strategies.

This means the application scope of Claude for Teachers has evolved beyond simple “content generation” to include decision-support in teaching. Tasks previously reliant on teacher experience—such as material compilation and learning status analysis—are now augmented with data-driven insights powered by AI.

Beyond functionality, Anthropic is also building an ecosystem centered around teacher usage. On one hand, the company has partnered with Teach For America and the National Education Association to launch AI literacy courses and training programs, helping educators understand the boundaries of AI capabilities. On the other hand, collaborations with edtech platforms such as ASSISTments, Brisk Teaching, Canva Education, Diffit, MagicSchool, and TeachFX enable the integration of Claude’s capabilities into existing teacher tools, lowering the barrier to AI adoption in classrooms.

For schools, data security remains a critical prerequisite for AI deployment. Anthropic emphasizes that teacher data will not be used to train its models, and student information will be protected in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of the United States. Currently, the product is undergoing pilot testing in the Detroit Public Schools district, working directly with frontline teachers to validate real-world effectiveness and accumulate experience for broader institutional rollout.

Same Goal, Different Paths: Claude Focuses on Instructional Workflow, ChatGPT on Collaboration Management

If Claude for Teachers signifies Anthropic’s formal entry into the U.S. K12 educator market, OpenAI has already taken a head start in positioning itself.

On November 19, 2025, OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teachers, providing free access to certified U.S. K12 educators until June 2027. At launch, OpenAI had already initiated partnerships with initial schools and districts, covering nearly 150,000 educators and staff.

At a fundamental level, both products share notable similarities. Educators can upload course files, enabling AI to assist in generating lesson plans, practice exercises, and learning materials, with content tailored to different grade levels and student proficiencies. Both companies emphasize data privacy, committing not to use data from their teacher versions to train models and ensuring student information complies with FERPA requirements.

However, in terms of product design philosophy, Claude and ChatGPT have chosen divergent paths.

ChatGPT for Teachers functions more like an AI workspace tailored for educators. Teachers can instruct the system to remember the grades they teach, course content, preferred formats, and instructional preferences. They can also import existing materials from Google Drive, Microsoft 365, and similar platforms. The product offers search, file upload, image generation, and connector functionalities, allowing teachers to use ChatGPT for various tasks—including curriculum design, student material generation, and resource organization.

In this model, ChatGPT’s core strength is not predefining a specific teaching workflow, but rather providing an open AI environment. Educators can upload materials and leverage tools based on their unique needs. For example, OpenAI demonstrated use cases including designing a 20-day course plan, generating sample essays for students at different proficiency levels, and aligning teaching content with ISTE standards.

In contrast, Claude for Teachers places greater emphasis on the teaching process itself. Anthropic has deeply embedded curriculum standards, knowledge progression frameworks, and professional educational resources into the product, enabling teachers to use AI to address concrete questions such as “Which standards should guide my lesson planning?” “How do I implement student differentiation?” and “How should I adjust instruction based on classroom feedback?” While Claude also supports reading teacher-uploaded documents, its primary design focus is on optimizing instructional workflows—not covering every aspect of administrative work.

This divergence becomes even more pronounced at the level of school administration and organizational collaboration.

From day one, ChatGPT for Teachers was designed with scalable deployment in mind. Teachers can collaborate via shared projects and custom GPTs, allowing subject teams to jointly maintain teaching resources and templates. School and district administrators can manage teacher usage through unified accounts, role-based permissions, and single sign-on systems. Thus, ChatGPT for Teachers serves not only individual educators but also educational institutions seeking standardized AI deployment.

Claude for Teachers, by contrast, currently focuses more on individual teacher use. Anthropic has not yet introduced a school- or district-level management system comparable to that of ChatGPT for Teachers. Instead, its current priority is leveraging curriculum standards, teaching skills, and integrations with third-party educational tools to help teachers fulfill daily instructional tasks, while exploring institutional applications through pilot programs in the Detroit Public Schools district.

This difference reflects each company’s distinct strategy for entering the education market: OpenAI aims to first establish an AI workspace for teachers, then extend into school management systems; Anthropic prioritizes deep integration into teachers’ instructional workflows, embedding AI capabilities directly into classroom contexts.

On the free access strategy, both companies adopt a similar approach. ChatGPT for Teachers is free until June 2027; Claude for Teachers allows teachers to register before June 30, 2027, and receive one full year of access. The extended free period not only lowers the barrier for teachers to experiment with AI tools but also serves as a strategic mechanism for both companies to win long-term contracts with schools and districts.

Currently, ChatGPT for Teachers is advancing faster in institutional deployment and collaborative management, while Claude for Teachers demonstrates stronger specificity in aligning with curriculum standards and instructional workflows. Their competition is not simply about feature comparison—it’s about entering the same market through different entry points: OpenAI seeks to embed AI within school management systems, whereas Anthropic aims to embed AI directly into the teaching process.

Teacher-Focused AI Tools Heat Up: Domestic Products Extend Into Classrooms and Schools

The recent launches of teacher editions by Anthropic and OpenAI reflect a strategic shift in AI education products. Previously, AI in education largely centered on student learning; now, an increasing number of companies are targeting teachers as the pivotal gateway for AI integration into schools.

The domestic market is witnessing a similar trend—but unlike Claude and ChatGPT, which rely on general-purpose large language models, Chinese edtech firms are building on existing textbook resources, teaching software, and school service ecosystems.

For instance, TAL Education Group’s Jiuzhang Aixue Teacher Edition leverages years of accumulated subject content, textbook versions, and knowledge frameworks. It has already launched over 170 educational intelligent agents, covering lesson planning, grading, question creation, parent-teacher communication, and creative teaching. After its 2026 upgrade, the platform further strengthens AI-powered interactive lesson materials—teachers input specific instructional needs, and the system generates dynamic content with operational and demonstration functions. Compared to early point-solution AI tools, Jiuzhang Aixue is striving to connect lesson plans, questions, presentations, and teaching resources into a seamless workflow spanning the entire teaching lifecycle.

Feixiang Teacher 2.0 focuses specifically on classroom applications. After teachers upload static lesson plans, the system generates smart lesson materials incorporating content explanation, interactive design, and real-time classroom data feedback—extending AI use from lesson preparation directly into live instruction. For such products, evaluation criteria are no longer solely about whether generated content is fluent, but rather whether the interaction design aligns with pedagogical goals and whether classroom feedback can be effectively collected and utilized.

In contrast, Seewo’s advantage stems from its long-standing presence in school terminals and teaching service infrastructure. Its AI offerings span lesson planning, instruction, homework, assessment, research and development, and administrative management, seamlessly integrating with classroom displays, student tablets, recording devices, and school data systems. For schools, purchasing is not just acquiring an AI tool, but adopting a comprehensive digital solution embedded within existing teaching workflows.

From Jiuzhang Aixue Teacher Edition to Feixiang Teacher and Seewo, different companies represent three distinct pathways for China’s teacher-focused AI products: building capabilities through educational content and research resources, enhancing interactivity around classroom applications, and driving large-scale adoption through school terminals and service ecosystems.

These developments illustrate that as general-purpose large language models become increasingly widespread, basic capabilities such as lesson plan generation, question design, and presentation creation are becoming standard features. The true differentiating factor for edtech companies is shifting toward deeper teaching scenarios—whether content aligns with curriculum frameworks, whether generated outputs can be directly applied in class, whether student data can produce actionable feedback, and whether the product can integrate into existing school systems.

Although Anthropic and OpenAI are competing in the U.S. K12 market, domestic enterprises face different curriculum systems, procurement models, and application environments. Nevertheless, the trajectory of teacher-facing AI products is converging: from standalone tools evolving into teaching work platforms, and from assisting individual teachers to penetrating classrooms and institutional systems.

Who can generate lesson plans is no longer the most critical issue. The next phase of competition will center on three more specific dimensions: whether generated content adheres to curriculum requirements, whether it can be practically used in class, and whether schools can sustainably deploy and manage the solution.
